Volunteer Profile - Helen Heald's XI

Volunteer Profile - Helen Heald's XI

St Chad's Broomfield CC24 Jan 2023 - 01:00

Today we hear from Club Treasurer and 1st XI Scorer, Helen Heald.

1. What are your nicknames at the club?

Does "Mum" count?

2. When did you join Chads and why?

My first connections with Chad's were as a junior parent and scorer many years ago. I officially joined the club in 2019 when I was 'pencil-hunted' by PB to score for the 1st XI, with the offer of a luxurious new scorebox (aka a 6' x 4' garden shed). I'm still waiting, Paul!

3. Which other clubs have you played for?

I played cricket for the old Leeds Ladies' team back in the 80s and keep threatening to make a playing comeback in the Chad Women's XI but I don't think the old knees are up to it now.

Scoring wise, I've scored for local league clubs Leeds Modernians and North Leeds and also for Shadwell in mid-week T20 games. I'm also the regular scorer for the Northern Cricket Society's annual Boxing Day game, the Yorkshire & North East Forty (XL) Club, the Silver Tykes in the YCF Grey Fox O/50 competition and Yorkshire O/60s in the national county championship - all great fun!

4. What is your most memorable Chads match or moment?

I had the great pleasure to score the match in July 2019 when Ewan Brannan broke the Aire-Wharfe 1st XI batting record with his 223* in Chad's 427 - 5 against Green Lane.

Equally memorable was the friendly T20 game at Chad's on a balmy summer's evening last year against a team of Afghan refugees. Some had never played cricket before, some not for several years but their sheer enthusiasm and enjoyment of the game and the occasion was contagious. Fun, fellowship and Afghan food to follow made this a night to treasure.

5. Who are your all-time top three Chads players?

The 6 people I listed in my last profile (who says scorers can't count?) are still top of my all-time Chad pops: namely keepers Dick Francks & Dave Crang, batters Ewan Brannan & Howard Johnson, bowler Rob Heald and scorer Hilary Oliver but there's a whole new generation of batters, bowlers, keepers and scorers at Chad's these days. They might not be in Ewan's record-breaking league just yet but they are developing all the time, especially Chad's women, and – more importantly – all are enjoying their cricket at Chad's.

6. What are your top three self-promotion facts?

I'm told I make a mean passion cake & vegan ginger bics but I once forgot to add the lemons in a lemon meringue pie. Yuck!.

As a contestant on the 80’s TV quiz show, “Masterteam”, I correctly answered a question with the 29-letter word ‘floccinaucinihilipilification’. (Google it, fortunately it’s not on YouTube!) The Beeb subsequently scrapped the quiz to air some new-fangled Aussie soap in the same time slot ... wonder what happened to that?
That's enough about me – told you I can't count.

7. What tune would you most like to go out to bat to?

Music & scoring don’t go well together.

8. What do you enjoy about scoring? (Special question for Helen)

I get to watch loooots of cricket, visit many lovely places, sit out in the fresh air all day, meet lots of interesting people and enjoy (though that's not always the appropriate word to use – depends who made them!) lots of scrummy cricket teas, with lashings of egg mayo sarnies & jam scones.

Quick plug for anyone interested in scoring: Scorers are always in demand and there are plenty of online courses available to help improve your scoring skills, whether you're a complete beginner or a hardy veteran and whether you score by book, tablet or computer. See the YCB website or contact the ECBACO Yorkshire County Scorers' Officer for more details.

9. What do you love the most about Chads?

It's friendly, it's diverse, it's fun!

10. What is your favourite part of the Chads ground and why?

The view from my garden shed scorebox looking across to St Chad's Church, especially in the early part of the season when the pink flowering cherries in front of the church are in full blossom. (The cricket being played in the forefront isn't always quite so pretty to look at but nothing's perfect.)

11. What one thing would you change about the club?

I’m looking forward to scoring in my luxurious new scorebox (it's been upgraded to an 8' x 6' garden shed) when our new pavilion opens later this year.
